Cesarean delivery, also called c-section, is surgery to deliver a baby. The baby is taken out through the mother's abdomen. Most cesarean births result in healthy babies and mothers. But c-section is major surgery and carries risks.

cesarean birth (suh-SAIR-ee-uhn burth) - Also called c-section. Surgery in which your baby is born through a cut that your doctor makes in your belly and uterus.

Cesarean birth is the birth of a baby by surgery. The doctor makes an incision (cut) in the belly and uterus (womb) and then removes the baby. The surgery is called a cesarean section or c-section.

The pros and cons of a cesarean birth should be weighed carefully before a decision is made. While there certainly are benefits associated with c-sections, it is also a major surgery and it, like any other procedure, carries risks.

A great position for mother's that have had a cesarean birth and want to avoid placing the baby against their abdomen. The mother should sit in a comfortable armchair with a pillow at her side to help support her arm and to lift the baby.

You may have to wait a few weeks to a few months after having the baby to start exercising, especially if you have a Cesarean birth. Yet once it is safe for you to exercise, you should get in the habit of doing so most days.

About 4 to 6 percent of women have postpartum hemorrhage and it is more likely with a cesarean birth. Hemorrhage may occur before or after the placenta is delivered.
