What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye.

This is a common eye infection in older babies and toddlers, caused by inflammation of the conjunctiva, (the protective transparent membrane which covers the eye), caused by either a bacterial or more commonly viral infection.

Neonatal Conjunctivitis - Inflammation of the newborn infant's eye that may be due to an infection acquired from its mother during passage through the birth canal, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia.

If you suspect a serious infection, such as pinkeye (conjunctivitis), call your doctor immediately. If your baby has an infection, the doctor will need to perform an exam and may prescribe antibiotic drops.

Then the red eyes or conjunctivitis appears and with that comes the rash. The rash appears two to four days from the initial symptoms. The rash spreads from the cheeks to the rest of the body.

If a pregnant woman gets chlamydia and goes untreated, she may have a premature baby. If a baby becomes infected during delivery, he or she may develop eye infections (pink eye, conjunctivitis) or breathing problems.

Chlamydial infections can cause cervicitis, urinary tract infection, and salpingitis (infection of the fallopian tubes). This bacterium can be passed to infants at birth and can cause conjunctivitis and pneumonia.
