Coagulopathy (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy [DIC]) - certain elements of the placenta are released into the mother's circulation causing blood clotting defects.

 


A serious blood clotting complication called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) may lead to severe bleeding or hemorrhage. Placental abruption (early detachment of the placenta) may also occur.

" DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation): a condition in which the blood will not clot correctly, often leading to life-threatening bleeding. Can occur in some cases of placental abruption.

syndrome, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection , B12 or folate deficiency, hyperthyroidism, massive transfusion, prosthetic heart valves, thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP), sepsis , disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) , ...

An end-stage of this complication may be something called DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy) in which all of the clotting factors are consumed microscopically throughout the body leading to massive hemorrhage.
