STUDY DESIGN: Structurally and chromosomally normal dichorionic twin gestations resulting in two live births after 24 weeks gestation were identified.

Dichorionic twins: If the babies have separate placentas, each will have an amnion and a chorion, so the membranes between them will be four layers thick and easy to see.

Dichorionic - A situation in which twins develop in their own sac during fetal development. All fraternal twins are dichorionic.

Not all dichorionic (DC) twins are dizygotic (DZ).
Like-sexed dichorionic (DC) twins need testing for zygosity.

There are three ways identical twins can exist in the uterus: dichorionic-diamniotic twins; monochorionic-diamniotic twins; monochorionic-monoamniotic twins.

Dichorionic/Diamniotic
Split occurs before the yolk sac is formed:
Each twin has his/her own placenta
Monochorionic/Diamniotic
Split occurs a day or two after yoke sac formation: ...

Twins in separate sacs (diamniotic) and with separate placentas (dichorionic) are the most common type of twins. They account for about 75% or more of all twins. In general, these twins have the lowest risks for pregnancy complications.

On ultrasound examination the presence of a triangular projection of placental tissue extending between two amniotic sacs. The twin peak sign strongly indicates that there are two separate placentas (dichorionic).
