Cervix dilation is a clinical term that all pregnant women should familiarize themselves with. How to know what your health care team is talking about when they mention dilation during labor and delivery.

Dilation refers to the opening and widening of the cervix, which will allow the baby to pass through during a vaginal delivery. Healthcare providers measure dilation in terms of centimeters, ranging from 0-10.

Necessity of dilation and curettage
This is not a mandatory medical procedure but most of the doctors recommend following this procedure after miscarriage.

Transition phase. Dilation check has been done.
Cervix has completed dilation & effacement.
Stage 2 of labor is beginning.

Dilation
Enlargement of the opening of a tubular structure. This usually refers to the cervical dilation that occurs during labor.

Dilation: Opening of the cervix
Another of the early signs of labor is your cervix beginning to open, or dilate. For most women, some dilation occurs before labor. Your health care provider will measure the dilation in centimeters from zero to 10.

Dilation and Curettage (D&C) - A procedure to dilate the cervix and scrape away the uterine lining.

Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) -- A procedure in which the cervix is dilated and the baby and placenta are removed. D&E is used to describe two different procedures.

Dilation & Curettage: A medical procedure where the cervix is manually dilated by a physician and a sample of the uterine lining is taken.
Dysmenorrhea: Difficult and painful menstruation.

If strictures (narrowing of the esophagus) are present, caused when the damaged lining of the esophagus becomes thick and hardened, a procedure called dilation is used.

Dilation - Describes how much the cervix is opened during pregnancy. It is measured in centimeters, and full dilation is 10cm. To deliver a full term baby the cervix must be opened 10cm to allow the fetal head enough room to pass.

Dilation - The opening up of the cervix for the vaginal delivery of a baby. Dilation is measured in centimeters from 0 - 10, with 10 being fully dilated. Once the cervix is fully dilated to 10 cm, delivery can begin.

D&C (Dilation and Curettage): A procedure used to dilate the cervical canal and scrape out the lining and contents of the uterus.

Contractions and dilation (opening) of the cervix before 37 weeks of pregnancy are considered preterm, or premature, labor. A normal pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks after the first day of the last period (38 weeks after fertilization).

Premature dilation of the cervix can cause a "bloody show" that warrants intervention so as to stop a premature delivery.

STUDY DESIGN: Amniocentesis was performed in 52 patients with acute cervical insufficiency (cervical dilation, > or =1.5 cm) and intact membranes and without regular uterine contractions (gestational age, 17-29 weeks).

If the posterior has not be discovered until complete dilation, or if the above methods have not been applied in early labor, the baby's head may still be turned to make delivery more likely.

When you reach 8-10 cm dilation you go through transition. This is the most challenging part of labor and is a point where a lot of women begin to doubt they can do this.

Sonography is the preferred method of diagnosis, and suction dilation and curettage (D & C) is the preferred method of evacuation.
