Down syndrome is a condition that babies are born with and is caused by a chromosome disorder called trisomy 21. This means that the baby has three copies of chromosome 21 rather than the normal two copies.

Down Syndrome - Also known as Trisomy 21, this congenital defect is the most common chromosomal abnormality. This birth defect occurs when the child receives duplicated information from chromosome #21.
Down syndrome occurs in one out of 800 live births and is caused by extra material from chromosome 21. In most cases (95%) there are three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. In 90% of these cases the extra chromosome is inherited from the mother.

At 40, the chance of Down Syndrome is 1 in 109. Age 35 has been recommended as the age at which aggressive screening be done via ultrasound and possibly amniocentesis or chorionic villous sampling.
Down syndrome can be diagnosed early in pregnancy (at about 15 to 16 weeks) by amniocentesis. This involves a very fine needle being passed into the womb, under guidance by ultrasound, and sampling of the (amniotic) fluid around the baby.
