DTP vaccine The DTP immunization also protects against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus and can be substituted for the DTaP vaccine in cases of DTaP vaccine shortage. The vaccination schedule is the same as for the DTaP.
The older DTP vaccine contained killed, whole bacteria and commonly caused fever, pain, and redness at the vaccination site. Now, a cell-free vaccine that uses inactivated toxins (toxoids) is used.
