Fetal Monitoring During Labor
Fetal monitoring during labor can be done at home or in the hospital or birth center using ascultation, Dopplers or various forms of electronic fetal monitoring.

 


Although fetal monitoring has not significantly reduced the rate of neurologic impairment in infants, it has almost eliminated fetal death during labor (stillbirth).

Fetal Monitoring Before Labor:
Your health care provider will monitor you and your baby throughout your pregnancy.

Fetal monitoring is an indirect assessment of maternal anesthetic and surgical management that is not as specific or effective as direct assessment of the maternal parameters to detect respiratory compromise.

Internal fetal monitoring (IFM) involves placing an electrode directly on an unborn baby's scalp through the cervix.

Continuous fetal monitoring (CFM) is often used in the management of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) but there is little evidence to support this approach.

Fetal monitoring
Monitoring of the baby before birth. This usually refers to monitoring of the fetal heart beat. There are two ways to do this.

How is fetal monitoring performed?
Using a fetoscope (a type of stethoscope) to listen to the fetal heart beat is the most basic type of fetal heart rate monitoring. Another type of monitoring is with a hand held Doppler device.

External fetal monitoring: A device that monitors a fetus's progress and vital signs during pregnancy or when a woman is in labor. It records the fetal heartbeat and the mother's contractions.
