Habitual aborter

Pregnancy & Parenting GyriHabitual abortion

Habitual Aborter: When a woman has had three or more miscarriages. Incomplete: An abortion after which some tissue remains inside the uterus. A D&C must be performed to remove the tissue and prevent complications.

Habitual aborter: a rather insensitive term for a woman who has repeated miscarriages. See "habitual miscarriage." Habitual miscarriage: the recurrent spontaneous loss of a baby.

Many providers will not even offer any medical evaluation to a woman until after she has had three or more early losses and has been classified, unflatteringly, as a 'habitual aborter.' The reasons for this are multiple.

Any woman who miscarries three or more times consecutively is called an habitual aborter. Habitual aborter's miscarriages may be caused by genetic or hormonal abnormalities, chronic infection, autoimmune disease, or uterine abnormalities.

Although it is uncommon, some women have three or more miscarriages in a row; they are called habitual aborters. When this occurs, the physician will thoroughly evaluate both the woman and her partner to determine the cause, if any.
