Pregnancy & Parenting HydraminosHydrocephalus

Hydramnios:
Hydramnios is a condition during pregnancy characterized by too much amniotic fluid. It is also known as amniotic fluid disorder or polyhydramnios.

Polyhydramnios
Polyhydramnios means too much amniotic fluid.
Amniotic fluid volume increases with the duration of pregnancy, with about 200 cc at 16 weeks to about a liter between 28 and 36 weeks.

Oligohydramnios is the condition where level of amniotic fluid becomes very low during full term pregnancy. Level of amniotic fluid is measured through a special technique termed as amniotic fluid index.

The causes of polyhydramnios are not fully understood. However, researchers believe that babies who suffer from a birth defect that prevents them from swallowing can be a cause of the condition.

We read with interest the case presentations describing the use of nitric oxide for preterm infants with apparent pulmonary hypoplasia related to oligohydramnios.

Definition: Condition where the mother may have less amniotic fluid than normal. Frequently from maternal dehydration.

Hydramnios and polyhydramnios-too much fluid, indicating possibly genetic problems or anatomical problems with the baby.

hydramnios - a condition characterized by too much amniotic fluid.
hydrops fetalis - a condition that occurs as the fetal organs fail and large amounts of fluid build up in the fetal tissues and organs.

Hydramnios or polyhydraminos: Increased amniotic fluid which may be due to diabetes, twin or multiple pregnancy, fetal anemia, or other fetal abnormalities

Hydramnios: Increased amniotic fluid.
Hydrocephalus: Excessive accumulation of fluid around the brain of the baby. Sometimes called water on the brain.
Hyperbilirubinemia: Extremely high level of bilirubin in the blood.

Hydramnios - Term for an excess of amniotic fluid.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum - Term for excessive vomiting in pregnancy.
Hypertension - Term for high blood pressure or the condition that causes it.

Polyhydramnios: An excessive amount of amniotic fluid.
Postpartum: After birth.
Preeclampsia: A disorder of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, edema, and kidney malfunction.

Polyhydramnios (also called Hydramnios)-This is an excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid. The condition may increase the risk of having a cesarean section.
Postpartum-This refers to the time period after giving birth.

Oligohydramnios
Abnormally low amount of amniotic fluid. Causes of oligohydramnios may include ruptured membranes (water bag), urinary tract abnormalities , fetal growth restriction, and postmaturity.
Oxytocin (Pitocin) ...

Oligohydramnios: A condition in which there is too little amniotic fluid in the uterus. Though most times women diagnosed with oligohydramnios continue with a normal pregnancy, it can sometimes be a sign of fetal distress.

Oligohydramnios
This condition implies low amniotic fluid. The amniotic sac is a sac full of fluid that forms a protective layer around the baby and helps fetal development.

Polyhydramnios
Too much amniotic fluid. It may lead to enlargement of the uterus, which can, in turn, result in preterm labor.

Polyhydramnios - An excessive amount of amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is produced first by the mother's body and later by the baby's urine to provide a warm and safe environment for the developing baby.

Oligohydramnios--too little fluid, taking away from the entire mass effect, leading to a smaller fundal height.
Hydramnios and polyhydramnios--to much fluid, indicating possibly genetic problems or anatomical problems with the baby.

Oligohydramnios is associated with long standing maternal diabetes, pre-eclampsia, hypertension, and congenital anomalies. When oligohydramnious is present a woman is 5-7 times more likely to have a Cesarean section.

If it can't swallow the fluid, you will develop a condition of excess amniotic fluid, called hydramnios or polyhydramnios.

Too much amniotic fluid in the uterus (polyhydramnios) or too little amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios).
Uterine problems, such as an unusually shaped uterus or uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growths in the uterine wall.

In some cases, a woman may have too much or too little amniotic fluid. Having too much is called polyhydramnios and having too little is called oligohydramnios.

Amniotic fluid complications: It is a pregnancy complication that results from a very high (polyhydramnios) or very low (oligohydramnios) amniotic fluid levels in the membranes surrounding the fetus.

In a few multiple pregnancies, too much amniotic fluid builds up (polyhydramnios), making life very uncomfortable for the mother. The fluid can be drawn off by amniocentesis but a premature labour may follow or bed rest may be advised.

The excess fluid in the recipient twin is called polyhydramnios and can lead to discomfort for the pregnant mother. Pressure on the cervix can lead to ruptured membranes and early delivery.
