What is hypospadias?
Hypospadias is a malformation that affects the urethral tube and the foreskin on a male's penis. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.

A birth defect of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries the urine from the bladder to an external opening. In males, the urethra should open at the tip of the penis.

A study in 2010 found evidence of a link between using insect repellents in the first trimester and a birth defect in boys called hypospadias. Hypospadias is when there is a problem with either the opening or the foreskin of the penis.

These vary greatly in severity, ranging from abnormal placement of the urinary opening in males (hypospadias) to absence of both kidneys. The cause of hypospadias, which is surgically correctable, is unknown.
