Track kick counts at about the same time each day when your baby is active.

All pregnant women should take time out of their day to assess their baby through fetal movement monitoring, or fetal kick counts. This is simply done by counting the number of kicks she feels over a certain time period.

You notice a change in the pattern of fetal movements called kick counts, or you stop having them.
You are taking insulin and you have not talked with your doctor about how to deal with low blood sugar levels.

There are lots of different ways to do these "kick counts," so check with your caregiver about how she wants you to track your baby's movements. Here's one common approach: Choose a time of day when your baby tends to be active.

Your doctor may have you check kick counts and let him or her know if you think your baby has been moving less than usual. Most pregnant women can feel their baby move after the 18th week of pregnancy.

All women should understand the basic tenets of fetal kick counts and when to become concerned for fetal well-being. Various protocols are available.

She should continue to do her fetal kick counts as directed by her doctor or midwife. At 37 weeks, the baby usually weighs around six pounds and is approximately 18 inches long. The brain, heart and lungs develop rapidly in this final stretch.
