LH SURGE - A sudden large release of Luteninizing Hormone from the pituitary glad that culminates in the release of a mature egg from the follicle about 36 hours after the surge begins.

LH: Luteinizing hormone: A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland involved in the control of ovulation. The role of LH is to trigger ovulation and help prepare the endometrial lining for implantation.

LH Surge
The release of luteinising hormone (LH) that causes the release of a mature egg from the follicle. Ovulation test kits detect the sudden increase of LH, signaling that ovulation is about to occur (usually within 24-36 hours).

LH - A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that triggers ovulation and stimulates the corpus luteum to secrete progesterone. Ovulation tests measure the surge of the hormone to determine what time ovulation will occur.

LH helps the corpus luteum to develop from the follicle where the egg was released.
The corpus luteum produces progesterone.

LH Surge: If two color bands are visible, and the test band is equal to or darker than the control band, one will probably ovulate in the next 24-48 hours. If trying to get pregnant, the best time to have intercourse is after 24 but before 48 hours.

LH Surge - The presence of two similar purple lines means you have detected your LH Surge. The test line may be darker than the reference line.

The levels of LH (Leutenising Hormone) are present in urine from the first day of the cycle, however, as shown in the graph above, they peak rapidly between 24 and 36 hours before ovulation.

These hormones inhibit the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland located in the brain.

Like a thermostat, it puts out FSH and LH when the estrogen and progesterone are low, and lowers production of these when the ovarian hormones are high.

In a normal ovulatory cycle, a surge of LH triggers ovulation and release of the egg(s). The body responds to hCG in the same manner as it does LH, so a surge of hCG can also initiate ovulation.
