Lupus erythematosus
A condition in which the body makes antibodies against itself. It can present with arthritis, skin rashes and multiple other problems. About 500,000 people in the U.S. have lupus, mostly women.

Many women that have lupus are concerned with the risks involved with pregnancy. In the past, it was recommended that women with lupus avoid pregnancy and terminate if conception were to occur.

Antibodies related to Lupus, and others, may point to a recurring reason for infertility and early miscarriage.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): This autoimmune disorder can cause arthritis-like symptoms, kidney disease, skin rashes and other problems.

Rare disorders such as Lupus or Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) can cause blood clots interfering with normal blood flow to the placenta, one possible cause of recurrent miscarriage.
What can be done?

If you have an abnormally low platelet count it is likely to have been caused by a condition you already have, such as lupus. Lupus happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells.

Women with the autoimmune diseases systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) are at increased risk for preeclampsia. This study included 250 pregnant women with either lupus or APS.
