An injection of magnesium sulphate (the same chemical as in Epsom salts) can halve the risk of pre-eclampsia progressing to eclampsia.

Translating research into policy and practice in developing countries: a case study of magnesium sulphate for pre-eclampsia.
BMC Health Serv Res, 5: 68. [Abstract] [Full-text] ...

Sometimes, if the problem of pre-eclampsia becomes serious, then the woman can be stabilized with the help of magnesium sulphate injections to avoid eclampsia-related seizures.

Then they tried Magnesium Sulphate (IV)... nasty stuff! Unfortunately, this also didn't work, so my doctors decided to ship me to another hospital where they had the best Perinatologists (premie doctors) in the state.

Your fluid levels will be controlled and you may be given injections (RCOG 2006) to lower your risk of developing eclampsia. The injections contain magnesium sulphate, which helps to prevent convulsions (Duley 2009).

The only treatment for eclampsia, or advancing pre-eclampsia is delivery, either by induction or Caesarean section. Women can be stabilised temporarily with magnesium sulphate. Delivery as early as 28 weeks is not unknown.
