Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus that grows in the cells lining the lungs and the back of the throat. Symptoms include a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.
Measles normally causes only a rash, cold-like symptoms and a temperature that can last up to two weeks. But in one in 15 cases it can result in complications such as eye infections and pneumonia. It is fatal in one in 1,000 cases.
Measles makes a child more susceptible to pneumonia and bacterial ear infections. Infants in particular can get pneumonia as a complication of measles.
