Obstetric approaches to the prevention of meconium aspiration syndrome.
J Perinatol, 28: S14-8. [Abstract] [Full-text]
A randomized placebo-controlled trial on the effectiveness of an herbal formula to alleviate menopausal vasomotor symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the hemodynamic effects of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) in a neonatal model of meconium aspiration syndrome. DESIGN: A prospective animal study. PATIENTS AND PARTICIPANTS:Eight anesthetized neonatal piglets.

If a newborn does swallow some meconium it can lead to Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS). While it is estimated that 5%-20% of newborns pass meconium in utero, only 5%-10% of those cases result in MAS.

This can cause a problem, it is called Meconium Aspiration Syndrome.. Meconium being a thick, sticky substance can cause problems for your baby in inflating the lungs immediately after birth. It can also lead to meconium aspiration pneumonia.

SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome)
MAS (Meconium Aspiration Syndrome) where the newborn has a greenish, sticky liquid in his intestines due to inhalation of amniotic fluid during pregnancy.

If the baby passes meconium in the womb, it can get into his lungs through the amniotic fluid. This can cause serious breathing problems, called meconium aspiration syndrome, especially if the fluid is thick.
