The abortion pill, mifepristone (also known as 'RU-486'), works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without this hormone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, and a pregnancy cannot continue.

Drugs such as mifepristone or methotrexate are used for abortion which is followed by prostaglandin. Prostaglandin comes in two types and its usage depends on the place where abortion is done.

Mifepristone and/or misoprostol cause the uterus to empty.
Dilation and curettage (D&C). This surgical procedure clears the uterus of tissue. A D&C offers the quickest treatment for a miscarriage.
