Mittelschmerz - A German word that is commonly used to describe pain that is felt on either side of the abdomen, near the ovaries, around the time of ovulation.

In some women, ovulation is accompanied by a characteristic pain called Mittelschmerz which lasts for several hours. A characteristic clear and stringy mucus develops at the cervix, ready to accept sperm.

Ovulation pain, or "mittelschmerz" (a German word meaning middle pain) affects approximately 20% of women. It is described as sharp pains followed by a dull nagging ache that can last a day or so around mid-cycle.

Some women experience sharp twinges or period like pain in the abdomen called Mittelschmerz, as the egg is released from the ovary. Just before ovulation, your vaginal mucus also changes in consistency to become thin, slippery and like egg white.

Once I started trying for a baby I realised that the gentle stomach pain I experienced each month was most likely an indicator that I was ovulating; it feels like a mild period pain and is called the 'Mittelschmerz'.
