We studied the natural course in monochorionic (MC) and dichorionic (DC) twin pregnancies in a historical cohort. Twin pregnancies were studied in a unique database of 651 twin pairs born in the period 1907 to 1938.
Monochorionic: When twins share a placenta and have just the amnions between them, the membrane will appear very thin and there will be a T shape where the membranes meet the single shared placenta.

There are three ways identical twins can exist in the uterus: dichorionic-diamniotic twins; monochorionic-diamniotic twins; monochorionic-monoamniotic twins.
This syndrome sometimes occurs in twins that are sharing a single placenta (known as a monochorionic placenta). In TTTS, abnormal blood vessels form inside of the placenta, disrupting the proper flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients.
Twins that share a placenta (monochorionic) can have connections between their circulations. In this case, the death of one can affect blood flow in the other.
When you have your first ultrasound scan, the sonographer will be looking for signs that your twins are monochorionic (ie they share one chorionic sac). If so, your pregnancy will be carefully monitored for signs of TTTS.

the junction of two amniotic sacs forms a 90 degree angle with the placenta, a T-shaped junction. There is no placental tissue extending between the amniotic membranes. The T-sign strongly indicates that there is a single placenta (monochorionic).
