Mucous Plug
The mucous plug is really nothing more than glorified snot. Basically it has held the position of the inside of your cervix for many moths protecting your body and baby from infection.
Mucous plug: A gelatinous "cork" of mucus often tinted with blood that seals the opening of the uterus during pregnancy.

There is a mucous plug that seals the opening of the cervix during pregnancy. When your body starts getting ready for delivery, this plug comes out. In some women, it comes out as a single pinkish blob while in others it may be in small pieces.
Losing the mucous plug is among the telltale signs of labor, but it's not a guarantee. Labor may still be days or weeks away.

A quick check showed me that she had some blood and some mucous, which could be her mucous plug. This was something else we learned at Bradley, although I guess one can learn about this lots of places.

For example, the mucous plug, which has kept the inside of the uterus sealed off from the vagina, falls out as the cervix begins to to soften and thin in preparation for labor. The mucous plug may fall out hours or even days before labor begins.
You may pass mucous plugs now. Mucous plug serves to protect the baby by blocking the opening of cervix. The uterus starts dilating now, thereby expelling the mucous plug sooner or later.
What should I do when I pass my mucous plug
Call if you pass your mucous plug BEFORE 35 weeks. After 35 weeks, it is not uncommon to pass the mucous plug. It might still be several weeks before you go into labor.

I'd been losing pieces of my mucous plug (ick) all week and was starting to feel contractions. J, my OB and I decided to schedule an induction if things hadn't progressed any farther by Tuesday.

Your water may or may not have broken and you probably didn't notice that the mucous plug has been released from the cervix. However these are questions that you doctor will ask.

As the cervix dilates, blood and the cervical mucous plug (from the cervical canal) pass from the vagina. The bloody show is a classic indicator of beginning or progressing labor.

It may be from implantation, formation of the mucous plug or even from the edge of the developing placenta. Without cramping, clots and heavy menstrual-type bleeding, a normal fetus will continue to grow.
