NTDs (neural tube defects) are birth defects that occur very early in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are the most common birth defects, resulting in severe mortality and morbidity. In 1995, the supplementation of folic acid periconceptionally was officially recommended in Germany.

Neural tube defects are serious abnormalities which occur in the development of the brain and spinal cord in about 1 in 500 babies. The cause is, as yet, unknown. The two most common forms are anencephaly and spina bifida.

It can be measured in the Mom-to-be's blood and studies have shown that certain levels can indicate what pregnant women may be at risk for neural tube defects (like Spina Bifida), Down's syndrome, and other birth defects.

Alpha fetoprotein: a protein produced by the baby that can be measured prenatally, by taking a tube of your blood, to identify possible neural tube disorders and other potential problems, such as Down's Syndrome or anencephaly.
