What is newborn screening?
"State newborn screening" refers to a test performed on every baby born in every state of the country within the first few days of life, to detect serious, life-threatening diseases.

The Newborn Screening Test is done using a small sample of blood collected when the baby is about 2 days old.

When newborns first come home from the hospital, it is not uncommon for their days and nights to be mixed up. They may sleep soundly for 3-4 hours during the day and then may awaken every 1-2 hours during the night.

Your newborn should be nursing eight to 12 times per day during about the first month. In the beginning, mothers may want to try nursing 10 to 15 minutes on each breast, then vary the time as necessary.

Expanded newborn screening can detect more than 30 different genetic disorders that affect between one in 25,000 and 200,000 newborns with one blood sample.

Cleaning Your Newborn's Umbilical Cord

Newborn to 3 Months: Babies cannot do much at this stage but their senses are eager for stimulation. Children's educational toys with high-contrast patterns and bright colors will capture little ones' attention.

Newborns enter a world filled with sights, sounds, and sensations. These auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli are received by highly specialized receptors in a baby's ears, eyes, and skin.

Newborn jaundice: Or neonatal jaundice is usually harmless. Often seen in infants around the second day after birth, lasting until day 8 in normal births, or to around day 14 in premature births.
