One of the most common symptoms of pregnancy is not having a menstrual period. While this can certainly be caused by sudden stress or extreme weight loss, it's most often associated with pregnancy.

One of the most common ways to know you are pregnant is when your period is three days late. If you have just gotten off birth control pills and your period is late wait at least a week before you take a home pregnancy test.

I have been in menopause--that is NO periods AT ALL for over two years now, and therefore had no need for birth control. I've never suffered any side effects--I just assumed that I had menopause and that's that.
My periods were virtually non existent so when we still had no period I decided to go to the doctor and get a test. My husband stayed home. The nurse called me in a few minutes later and showed me the huge plus sign. I got weak and felt faint.
What you're describing is a medical condition called secondary amenorrhea, meaning that you've developed a condition of having no periods after having had them regularly before. (Primary amenorrhea would mean never having ever had a period at all).
