PCOS and Infertility - Diagnosis and Treatment
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, usually referred to as PCOS, is a hormonal imbalance that causes a thick coating to be produced around the ovaries, preventing ovulation.
Because no exact cause for PCOS is known, a cure for PCOS is currently not available. Instead, women with PCOS must rely upon long-term management of their symptoms.
PCOS and Fertility
Women with PCOS are either oligo ovulatory or anovulatory, meaning that they ovulate less often than normal or not at all.
How is PCOS diagnosed?
In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination, diagnostic procedures for PCOS may include:
pelvic examination - a physical examination of both the external and internal female reproductive organs.
PCOS is not quite the disorder Drs. Stein and Levinthal thought it was in 1935. There seems to be a lot more to it than that, as the current wave of discovery which began in 1980 indicates.
All PCOS patients undergoing ovulation induction with FSH should be managed by a reproductive endocrinologist. PCOS patients have a higher incidence of complications, such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
Women with PCOS often have trouble keeping a healthy weight. Having a healthy weight and increasing physical activity will help maintain ovulation and fertility. It'll also help prevent other complications like diabetes and heart disease.
