Pitocin is another very controversial topic in childbearing today. Oxytocin is a natural hormone produced by a woman's body (There are several ways that this is done, that we will discuss later.) that cause uterine contractions.

Many women going into labor have heard the word "pitocin," and they are vaguely familiar with its purpose.

Pitocin and Syntocinon are commonly used brand names for the drug Oxytocin, a hormone found naturally in the pituitary gland used to help start or continue labor and sometimes to control bleeding after delivery.

Pitocin®
Synthetic formulation of a hormone, oxytocin, that stimulates uterine contractions and is used to induce labor or delivery. Pitocin® is a commonly used drug during labor.

Pitocin is frequently used to induce or augment labor. Because it causes abnormally strong contractions, many women receive a pain-relieving drug such as a narcotic.
