Currently the polio immunisation is given as drops in the mouth, in three doses: at 2, 3 and 4 months old.
Today, polio is extremely rare in the United States because of the use of the vaccine. However, it is still common in other countries, so all children need to be immunized for protection from the disease.

Polio is caused by a virus that enters the body through the intestinal tract and can extend into the blood stream. From the blood it enters, infects, and destroys the nerve cells of the spinal cord and brain stem (lower part of the brain).
