A primary PPH (postpartum haemorrhage) is heavy bleeding, which is defined as the loss of 500 millilitres (ml) or more of blood in the first 24 hours after the birth.
In pregnancy it is usually called antepartum haemorrhage and after the birth it is called postpartum haemorrhage. Any bleeding in pregnancy should be reported to a doctor or midwife.
“Some women can experience a primary postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) after a fast second labour, as the uterus has worked very hard, and very quickly to get the baby out, and it can be tired and not work quite as efficiently,' says Adair.
