premature separation of the placenta -- a condition where the placenta pulls away from the uterine wall prior to or during labor. This serious situation can cause fetal distress and death if not caught and the baby delivered immeidately.

 


In the later trimesters, disruption of the placenta--premature separation of the placenta away from the uterine wall--can cause massive hemorrhage that threatens not only the baby, but the mother as well! This is a true obstetrical emergency.

Placental abruption is also known as premature separation of the placenta. This condition involves the detachment of the placenta from the wall of the uterus. The blood clot is formed between the placenta and uterus.

While pregnant, the smoking mother puts her child at risk for premature separation of the placenta, called abruption, which is a devastating hemorrhaging event that can result in death of the baby and possibly even that of the mother, too.

Placental abruption (abruptio placenta): Premature separation of the placenta from the inner wall of the uterus, possibly due to high blood pressure, injury, smoking, or an unhealthy diet.

Placenta previa: A condition in which the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix, hindering vaginal delivery.

If you're in a job that puts you at risk for abdominal trauma, like working as a police officer or with unruly children, you risk premature separation of the placenta. If that is the case, you'll want to find another situation, if possible.

Some indications of cocaine abuse in a pregnant women include early contractions, a hyperactive or inactive fetus, premature labor and "abruptio placenta," a premature separation of the placenta from the uterus that endangers the fetus.

Though no studies have been done to document this, there is concern that the rapid stops and jarring forces of rides like this could cause placental abruption (premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall).
