Labor that begins before the end of the 37th week is considered "preterm" or "premature." Approximately 1 out of every 10 babies born in the United States is preterm.

What Is Preterm Labor?
You may be experiencing early or preterm labor if uterine contractions become strong enough to cause dilatation, shortening, and thinning (effacement) of your cervix.

Preterm birth occurs in about 12 percent of all pregnancies in the United States, often for reasons we just don't understand. A normal pregnancy should last about 40 weeks. That amount of time gives the baby the best chance to be healthy.

Labor that starts before the 37th week of pregnancy. Since most pregnancies last between 37 and 42 weeks, preterm labor leading to preterm delivery, may put your baby at risk for health problems.

A Preterm babies should usually continue drinking breast or formula milk until at least a year after their due date. Your local medical team may give you advice on when your child is ready to go on to cow's milk.

Also, preterm delivery can happen due to structural abnormality or overstretching of the uterus by carrying more than one fetus (twins, triplets, or more) or using tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs during pregnancy.
