PROM (Premature Rupture of the Membranes)
The amniotic sac, or membranes, contains the amniotic fluid and baby and usually breaks during the early stages of labor, often referred to as the water breaking.

PROM is a real thinking dilemma for the obstetrician. Certainly if it were to happen after lung maturity (at or past 37 weeks), then delivery via induction or, if indicated, C-section, is prudent. The times from 35 to 37 weeks is a gray zone.

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is a spontaneous break or tear in the amniotic fluid sac before the onset of labor. It may happen at any time during a pregnancy and occurs in approximately 10 to 15% of all pregnancies. ...

provera -- a synthetic progesterone often given to women to bring on a period after a seven or more week delay, when she is not pregnant ...

PROM's causes aren't thoroughly understood, but taking certain steps may help reduce your risk. Smoking increases the risk of PROM, so quit now.

PROM - A condition that occurs in some pregnancies, in which the sac that holds the fluid surrounding the fetus ruptures after the 37th week of pregnancy, but before labor has begun.

PROM
The term stands for premature rupture of membranes and signifies that a woman's water has broken early.
Prostaglandin gel or cream
Medication used to ripen the cervix before labor is induced.

PROM - Premature Rupture of Membranes
Premature Rupture of Membranes - spontaneous rupture of fetal membranes at least one hour before the onset of labor. Characterized by a trickle or gush of fluid from the vagina.

Preterm PROM (before 37 weeks) is much more likely to lead to problems and this will be discussed in more detail.
Have My Waters Actually Gone?

Sometimes PROM happens after an amniocentesis test at 16 to 18 weeks. At such an early stage the unborn child is almost always lost.

The cause of PROM is often unknown. Some causes are thought to be:
Uterine or genital tract infections, including sexually transmitted diseases
Poor nutrition ...

This is also referred to as PROM. Fortunately, PROM is not very commom. About 1 to 3% of pregnant women will experience their membranes rupturing early. Your membranes could rupture weeks or months before your due date.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and clinical effectiveness of intravaginal misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue, for labor induction in gravidas with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) at term.

However, extrapolating from our results, one may suggest that in the absence of maternal GBS colonization and with only light meconium staining of the amniotic fluid, the traditional 12-hour cut-off for PROM is reasonable.

Studies suggest that BV may increase a woman's chances of PROM and preterm delivery (4). Women with symptoms of BV are treated with antibiotics to help reduce this risk.

Although there have been many advances in caring for premature babies, there has been little significant improvement in treating the problem of preterm labor or PROM.

Frequently abbreviated as PROM, this means that the membranes (amniotic sac) has broken or developed a hole at any time during pregnancy and more than 12 hours before the onset of labor.

Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM) / Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM)
Rupture of the membranes near the end of pregnancy may be caused by a natural weakening of the membranes or from the force of contractions.

For about one in 10 women the waters break at the end of pregnancy but before labour starts (prelabour rupture of membranes at term or PROM).

Rupture of membranes before contractions start is called premature rupture of membranes Opens New Window, or PROM. Before 37 weeks of pregnancy, it is called preterm premature rupture of membranes, or pPROM.

It causes a leakage or a gush of amniotic fluid. Rupture of membranes before contractions start is called premature rupture of membranes, or PROM. Before 37 weeks of pregnancy, it is called preterm premature rupture of membranes, or pPROM.

Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM)
Your water breaking too early is another risk of smoking in pregnancy. It can also lead to premature birth.

SROM: Spontaneous Rupture of Membranes. If this occurs long before labor onset, it is called PROM (premature rupture of membranes). Usually labor naturally begins within a few hours (if it already hasn't) after SROM.

The beginning of labor, which can be caused by rupture of the amniotic sac around the fetus (premature rupture of the membranes, or PROM).
Placenta abruptio, rupture of the uterus, or damage to the umbilical cord.
