Prostaglandins
A class of chemicals produced by the prostate and other parts of the body that can have various and powerful effects on the body. They were first discovered in the prostate gland , hence their name.

Prostaglandin
What is it? Prostaglandin is a hormone-like substance, which helps stimulate uterine contractions.

Prostaglandin
A natural substance used in pessaries to soften the cervix and stimulate the start of labour.
Pudendal block ...

Prostaglandins -- Hormone-like substances found in men and women. It is hypothesized that prostaglandins secreted by active, young endometrial implants may interfere with the reproductive organs by causing muscular contractions or spasms.

Prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors
These include medications like indomethacin, ketorolac, sulindac. Some possible side effects for you include nausea or heartburn.
Possible side effects for your baby include: ...

Prostaglandin: A naturally occurring body chemical (found in semen and other bodily fluids) or a drug which is used to stimulate the uterus to contract, normally given by gel or vaginal tablet.

prostaglandin(s) - a type of "tissue" hormone actively involved in many processes of human pregnancy. Tissue hormones are produced in the tissue in which they work (unlike circulating hormones produced in glands).

Prostaglandin - A hormone involved in the onset of labor.
PUBS - See "Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling".
Pudendal Block - A local anesthetic injected into the vaginal wall.

Prostaglandin - A hormone-like compound involved in the onset of labor
Pudendal block - A local anesthetic injected into the vaginal wall to ease the pain of second-stage labor, and for an episiotomy ...

Prostaglandins
Substances found in bodily tissues which are often responsible for the contractions of smooth muscles such as the uterus. Prostaglandins keep blood pressure low and influence hormone activity.

Prostaglandin E2 versus oxytocin for inducing labor

Effects on time and mode of delivery ...

Prostaglandin is the main ingredient which can be applied directly to the cervix to achieve these results and also another source of this same chemical is by having sex.
Semen contains the same chemical which can induce birth naturally.

prostaglandin inhibitors (i.e., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, or NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen) - to reduce pain
acetaminophen
oral contraceptives (ovulation inhibitors)
progesterone (hormone treatment) ...

Prostaglandins - Hormones that are produced by the uterus to soften the cervix in preparation for a vaginal delivery. If labor needs to be medically induced, synthetic prostaglandins will be used to soften the cervix.

PROSTAGLANDIN E1
In women with fetal death before 28 weeks' gestation, induction may be accomplished using prostaglandin E2 vaginal suppositories (10-20 mg every 4-6 h), misoprostol (ie, prostaglandin E1) vaginally or orally (400 mcg every 4-6 h), ...

Prostaglandins
Hormones which ripen / soften the cervix to prepare for labour (present in semen). These are present in ‘prostin’ pessaries (tablets inserted into vagina, next to cervix), which are used to induce labour.

Prostaglandin gel or cream
Medication used to ripen the cervix before labor is induced.
Prudental Block
A procedure that gives regional pain relief in the perineum area during birth and is also used when repairing an episiotomy.

Prostaglandins
a group of hormone-like chemicals that have various effects on reproductive organs; so named because they were first discovered in the prostate gland ...

The prostaglandins in the gels used to induce labour are very similar to hormones found in semen, so popular belief has it that making love can sometimes help. It's a lot more natural way to get things started if you can be bothered (we couldn't).

If the prostaglandins don't put you into labor, your caregiver will then administer a drug called Pitocin (also known as oxytocin). It's given through an IV and used to start labor or augment contractions you've been having on your own.

Using the prostaglandin gel makes your labour much more natural if the cervix is thick. It certainly reduces the number of caesarean sections, which used to be associated with inductions of labour in women with an unfavourable cervix.

One type of prostaglandin helps protect the lining of the stomach and GI tract. And the Cox-1 enzyme helps make this prostaglandin. Since regular NSAIDs block Cox-1 enzymes, they slow down the manufacture of this prostaglandin.

Medications (prostaglandins) to maintain patency of the ductus arteriosis may help stabilize a baby with hypoplastic left heart syndrome to some degree, but surgical management will be necessary within a few days birth.

helps maintain the pregnancy Prolactin - the pituitary hormone that in high amounts stimulates milk production Prostate gland - the male gland encircling the urethra that produces one third of the fluid in the ejaculate Prostaglandins ...

Yet, because of the prostaglandin, sex can be advised against, especially if you're a high-risk pregnancy. Abstain, if this is the case, but always check with your medical team if you're not sure.

During ovulation, prostaglandins are released that cause contraction of portions of the fimbria, which connect to the ovary called the fimbria ovariaca, ...

The doctor came in and got me situated with a prostaglandin suppository. This time, since I was already somewhat dilated, it managed to make me start contracting almost right away. I wanted to walk this time, instead of being trapped on the bed.

Also, semen contains chemicals called prostaglandins which help to soften the cervix and prepare it for the baby's delivery.

Premenstrual syndrome involves inflammatory substances called prostaglandins.
How is the diagnosis of PMS made? - The diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome can only be made from the history.

at 40+3 they are worried about leaving him any longer, so tomorrow they will attempt induction with synthetic prostaglandins.

gross I know but it is a prostaglandin so will aid with cervical ripening as well as dilation.. ok now if that didn't make you uncomfortable we can go on to the next fun wives tale. drinking caster oil..

Inflammation from infections causes a local release of a substance known as prostaglandin. Prostaglandins are found throughout the body, and the substance is believed to have some role in the beginning of labor.

The medication used to induce labor - oxytocin or a prostaglandin - might provoke too many contractions, which can diminish your baby's oxygen supply and lower your baby's heart rate.
Infection.

But many doctors will not do an elective induction using the prostaglandin preparation unless you've begun having irregular contractions or showing signs of softening.

The process of induction commonly involves the intravenous administration of pitocin or prostaglandin gel - drugs that stimulate the contraction of the uterus - or the artificial rupture of the membrane or bag of waters that surrounds the baby in the ...

However, not only does this cause an excessive amount of prostaglandins, and their release into areas besides the uterus (i.e., the abdomen), but the endometrial cells do not always act “in sync' with the uterine ones, ...

Cervidil® is a wafer that is embedded with prostaglandin and has a string on it like a tampon. It is placed in the vagina. It delivers a constant rate of prostaglandin each hour. Cervidil® lasts for 12 to 18 hours.

Usually prostaglandin gels would be used to make the cervix soft (favourable).

Prostaglandins - These hormone-like substances are found in both men and women while sperm washing techniques remove prostaglandins during artificial insemination to reduce cramping in the woman's body.

Exposure to the prostaglandins in semen may cause contractions — which could be worrisome if you're at risk of preterm labor.
Sexually Transmitted Disease (you or your partner)
Problems with the cervix.

Natural prostaglandins found in semen help to stimulate the cervix in and prepare it for delivery. Additionally, oxytocin released when the woman experiences orgasms can also trigger labor contractions.

Naproxen blocks the enzyme cyclooxygenase that makes prostaglandins, resulting in lower concentrations of prostaglandins. As a consequence, inflammation, pain and fever are reduced.

Instead, the culprit is prostaglandin, the same chemical behind cramps. Large amounts of prostaglandin can lead to nausea, vomiting, headaches, backaches, diarrhea, and severe cramps. Fortunately, these symptoms usually last for only a day or two.

inserting vaginal suppositories that contain prostaglandin hormone to stimulate contractions.
administering an intravenous infusion of oxytocin (a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates contractions) or similar drug.

1 Researchers have noted that unripe papaya latex acts like prostaglandin and oxytocin, which the body makes to start labor.2 Synthetic prostaglandin and oxytocin are commonly used to start or strengthen labor contractions.

Postulated mechanism(s) includes interference with prostaglandin synthesis, a reduction in sensitivity of the ductal muscle to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and an increase in the activity of PGE2 inactivation enzyme.23,24 ...

The penetration stimulates the lower portion of the uterus, releasing prostaglandins. Semen also contains prostaglandins, which helps ripen the cervix. Orgasm in a pregnant woman may also cause contractions.

It can be accomplished by using a variety of agents (cytotec, prostaglandin, cervidil, or pitocin or by breaking the water in a patient who is already dilated).

Cervical gel
This usually refers to a prostaglandin medication that is prepared in a gel-like material. It is placed on the cervix to hasten cervical dilatation in preparation for delivery.
Cervicitis
Inflammation of the cervix.

Induced labor: Labor is initiated or accelerated through intervention, such as applying prostaglandin gel on the cervix, using an intravenous drip of the hormone oxytocin, or by rupturing the water bag

- artificially breaking your waters;
- giving you a pessary or hormones (prostaglandin) that are absorbed into your cervix;
- giving you hormones straight into your blood through an oxytocin drip.

Sweeping of the membranes separates the amniotic membrane from the uterus enough so that the uterus starts making prostaglandins Opens New Window. This type of chemical helps trigger contractions and labor.

Female enjoyment creates the hormone oxytocin which can help ripen your cervix and get it ready for labor. A mans semen contains the hormone prostaglandins which can cause contractions.

Usually, as the end of pregnancy approaches, the cervix moves forward in the pelvis and begin to soften. If the cervix does not soften on its own, prostaglandins may be needed to ripen it to jump-start labor or to prepare for an induction.

SEMEN - Fluid of the male reproductive tract, containing sperm and a number of other substances such as water, simple sugars, alkaline chemicals, and prostaglandins.
