Prostaglandin gel/pessaries containing prostaglandins can be placed in the vagina to ripen the cervix. Your baby's heartbeat will be monitored for a while to make sure that he is not affected by the induction.

Prostaglandin Gel - A labor-inducing medication that can be inserted near the cervix to artificially soften the cervix for labor.

Prudental Block
A procedure that gives regional pain relief in the perineum area during birth and is also used when repairing an episiotomy.

Using the prostaglandin gel makes your labour much more natural if the cervix is thick. It certainly reduces the number of caesarean sections, which used to be associated with inductions of labour in women with an unfavourable cervix.

The process of induction commonly involves the intravenous administration of pitocin or prostaglandin gel - drugs that stimulate the contraction of the uterus - or the artificial rupture of the membrane or bag of waters that surrounds the baby in the ...

Induced labor: Labor is initiated or accelerated through intervention, such as applying prostaglandin gel on the cervix, using an intravenous drip of the hormone oxytocin, or by rupturing the water bag

Non-progression of labor (longterm contractions without adequate cervical dilation) is generally treated with cervical prostaglandin gel or intravenous synthetic oxytocin preparations. If this is ineffective, Caesarean section may be necessary.

If labor has not started at an appropriate time or if there are maternal indications for delivery before labor starts naturally, medications may be used to initiate labor. Prostaglandin gel and oxytocin (Pitocin®) are the most common medications.
