Or you may decide to have a minor operation called an ERPC (evacuation of retained products of conception). This is carried out under a general anaesthetic, normally as a day procedure.
If you do miscarry, or know for certain a miscarriage is occurring, you may need to go into hospital to ensure all the pregnancy has come away. This is called 'evacuation of retained products of conception' and is done under general anaesthetic.
Heavy bleeding during the first few weeks after delivery (postpartum) or after an abortion may occur because the uterus has not contracted to the prepregnancy size or because fetal tissue remains in the uterus (retained products of conception).
If the fever is high and the uterus tender, septic abortion is probably present and you should make preparations for D&C to remove any retained products of conception that might prolong the recovery.
This is known as an evacuation of retained products of conception (ERPOC), but is sometimes called a dilatation and curettage (D&C). It takes about 5 minutes.
