Stillbirth happens very rarely, but a few parents are faced with the awful prospect of having to give birth to a baby that they know is dead. If you're pregnant, the idea of stillbirth may be too painful for you to contemplate.

TUESDAY, Oct. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Dr. Alexander Heazell and his then-wife were happily getting ready for the birth of their first child in 2001. They planned to name him Jack.

A stillbirth is defined as a baby who's born dead after the 24th week of pregnancy. Neonatal death is when a live-born baby dies before the age of four weeks.

What is Stillbirth?
Stillbirth is the term used to describe the loss of a pregnancy after the 20th week of pregnancy, due to natural causes. Stillbirths occur in nearly one in 200 pregnancies in the United States every year.

What Is Stillbirth?
Stillbirth is the delivery, after the 20th week of pregnancy, of a baby who has died. Loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy is called a miscarriage.

"Stillbirth is a relatively common important public health issue because it reflects on the quality and quantity of prenatal case and on the general health of a population, and it always tragic," says Dr. Dudley.

A stillbirth can occur from a variety of reasons. 10-20% of stillbirths are caused by a problem with the placenta.

Women who experience a pregnancy loss after the 20th week of their pregnancy are said to have had a stillbirth. Because this form of miscarriage occurs quite late in a pregnancy, it can be acutely upsetting to a mother.

Stillbirth is more likely in pregnant women with diabetes. The fetus may grow slowly in the uterus due to poor circulation or other conditions, such as high blood pressure, that can complicate diabetic pregnancy.

In very rare cases, placenta previa causes a stillbirth or newborn death. Should you experience such a loss, allow yourself time to grieve. Expect that your partner, children, and other family members may also be deeply affected.

Miscarriage, or stillbirth, is still a possibility at the later stages of pregnancy, however it is less likely. If you are bleeding a lot, see your health care provider or go to the hospital just to be sure.
