Syntocinon drip
This is a drip which contains a synthetic form of oxytocin, the hormone which makes your womb contract. The drip is put into your arm and is controlled so that it delivers a gradually increasing amount of oxytocin.

What is it? Syntocinon is a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin. You would only be offered Syntocinon if your labour hasn't started following a membrane sweep or prostoglandin, or if your contractions are not very effective.

Pitocin and Syntocinon are commonly used brand names for the drug Oxytocin, a hormone found naturally in the pituitary gland used to help start or continue labor and sometimes to control bleeding after delivery.
In this case, induction involves having a hormone drip (syntocinon) put into your arm.
The hormone level via the drip is slowly increased until you are in established labour.
Induction of labour with prostaglandin E2 (hormone gel) is safe, however syntometrine should theoretically be avoided for the 'active third stage'. This contains the drug ergometrine which can cause a severe attack; syntocinon (oxytocin), ...
If contractions slow down or stop altogether, then a drug called Syntocinon - an artificial form of the labour hormone oxytocin - may be necessary, and that increases the chance of intervention.
