Ritodrine and terbutaline are sometimes used as tocolytic medicines to slow uterine contractions during preterm labor. Ritodrine and terbutaline are given through a vein (intravenously, or IV) and/or by injection.

 


OBJECTIVE: To evaluate oral nifedipine versus subcutaneous terbutaline tocolysis for external cephalic version (ECV). DESIGN: A double-blind randomised trial. SETTING: A university hospital in Malaysia.

The most common medicine to have patients on to prevent labor is terbutaline (Brethine). It is actually an asthma medicine which relaxes smooth muscle--both in the bronchial tree and in the uterus.
