Thiamin Deficiency Can Cause Brain Damage

A deficiency of thiamin (vitamin B) can lead to loss of cognition, memory decrease and potential brain damage, according to two new studies.

 


Thiamin: One of the B complex vitamins. Also known as Vitamin B1.
Toxoplasmosis: A disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which may cause birth defects if acquired prenatally.

Thiamine (B1)
Thiamine is important for metabolism and development of the brain, nervous system, and heart. When you are pregnant you need increased amounts of many vitamins, including B1. The RDA for pregnant women is about 1.3 mg.

THIAMINE (VITAMIN B-1): Direct correlation has been shown between supplementation of thiamine early in pregnancy and higher infant birth weight and size, and thiamine depletion is common during pregnancy; supplementation is recommended.
