Umbilical cord
The cord which links mum and the baby in the womb. Three blood vessels are protected by a jelly-like substance - they carry nutrients to baby and waste products back to mum. It is usually 50-60cm long.
Umbilical cord care in newborns is also important. Some doctors suggest swabbing the area with rubbing alcohol until the cord stump dries up and falls off, usually in 10 days to 3 weeks, but others recommend leaving the area alone.

The PUBS procedure takes fetal blood directly from the umbilical cord to obtain the fetal cells or plasma needed for DNA, chromosomal, or biochemical testing.
When will the umbilical cord drop off?
Soon after birth, your baby's umbilical cord is clamped and cut. The remaining stump will dry-out and blacken and, after 10 to 21 days, drop off.
Normally, when the umbilical cord develops, it forms three vessels: two arteries and one vein. However, in some cases, just one artery develops. Precisely why this occurs is not entirely known.
