Zona Pellucida: A translucent non-cellular layer, which surrounds the egg and embryo. Just prior to implantation the zona will be broken and the embryo released to implant in the endometrium.

Zona pellucida

A glycoprotein coating that surrounds the outer layer of the ovum (egg) and early embryo. The zona pellucida disappears just prior to implantation of the early embryo into the uterine wall.

There will be a flat layer of cells on the exterior of this cavity, and the zona pellucida will remain the same size as before. Cells are growing increasingly smaller to fit in.

Normally, when the embryo reaches the uterus it must break through its own outer membrane, called the zona pellucida, in order to implant. This is known as "hatching" (imagine a chicken hatching from an egg).

In assisted hatching, a small hole is made in the membrane surrounding the embryo, known as the zona pellucida. Piercing the membrane makes it easier for the embryo to break free and ultimately attach to the uterine wall.

Then, a flat layer cell forms on the exterior of this cavity, and the zona pellucida, the blastocyst's barrier, remains the same size as before. Cells grow increasingly smaller to fit in.

ASSISTED HATCHING: A technique whereby a small hole is created in the zona pellucida (eggshell) of the embryo in order to facilitate implantation of the embryo in the uterus.

The two cells, also known as the daughter cells, are surrounded by a glycoprotein called zona pellucida. The cells keep on dividing to form a spherical mass known as blastocyst. This blastocyst is made up of three different layers.

Once ejaculated, the sperm must be capable of swimming through the cervix, into the uterus, and to the distal end of the fallopian tubes. A sperm must attach to, and penetrate, the zona pellucida (membrane surrounding the egg) and fertilize the egg.
