Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) is a procedure similar to IVF. In ZIFT, the embryo is surgically placed in the end of the fallopian tube, where fertilization normally takes place.

During the three- to four-day trip from your Fallopian tube to your uterus, the fertilized egg (now called a zygote) will divide into 16 identical cells. Once it enters the uterus, the zygote is called a morula.

Identical siblings arise where one egg is fertilised and the resulting zygote splits into more than one embryo. Identical siblings therefore have the same genetic material.

Zygote intrafallopian transfer, or ZIFT (also called tubal embryo transfer): A hybrid of IVF and GIFT. The eggs retrieved from the woman's ovaries are fertilized in the lab and replaced in the fallopian tubes rather than the uterus.

The spermatozoan fertilizes an ovum or various ova in the uterus or fallopian tubes, and this results in one or multiple zygotes.

Identical twins (also called monozygotic, MZ or uniovular) occur when for no known reason the fertilised egg (zygote) splits during the first 14 days and each twin gets the same genetic make-up.

All human beings start as a single cell, the zygote. This cell divides into a clump of two cells, these two cells divide into a clump of four cells, and so on. Ultimately, a human being develops from the growing clump of cells.
