Armed with this data, you can assess how strong the current trend really is by looking not only at the number of advancing and declining issues, but also at the total volume associated with the advances and declines.

To illustrate, say that todays advancing issues ($ADV or $NYADV) is 1,692 stocks. That is 1,692 stocks closed the day with an increase in their share price. The declining issues ($DECL or $NYDEC) is 1,311.

Advancing Declining Issues: A market momentum indicator using the advancing issues and the declining issues. It subtracts the declining issues from the advancing ones and is usually smoothed to make it a good overbought oversold indictor.

Advancing volume is the total volume for all securities who's price move higher. Declining volume is the total volume for all securities that declined in price.

If the TRIN > 1 the market is leaning bearish with a higher number being more bearish, but an extremely high number being a possible contrarian indicator.

Bull Market
An advancing trend in stock prices that usually occurs for a time period of months or years. Bull markets are generally characterized by high trading volume.

Advance-Decline Volume (ADV) is a variation of OBV used when both advancing and declining volume are available for the same day.
