Backtesting of technical methods in light of past prices is the most popular testing strategy among technical traders. That price patterns repeat themselves is a basic principle of technical analysis.

With backtesting, you can view your screens performance and compare it to a benchmark, such as the S&P 500 over time. It shows the number of stocks traded, a summary of the strategy and the portfolio's return.

Answer: Backtesting is the process of testing your trading system using past market data. For example, let's say you have a system that buys a currency after every two bullish candlesticks.

BackTesting - BackTesting refers to the actual execution of a Trading System on a security, or set of securities over a given period of time.
Custom Indicator - A Custom Indicator is just that.

Backtesting: This is the process of gauging the accuracy and quality of a VaR model by comparing the model-generated VaR measures that it produces over time against actual observed gains and losses.

Backtesting is using past data to test a trading system. It's useful because if a system was not profitable in the past it will not be profitable in the future.

Backtesting: A strategy is tested or optimized on historical- data and then the strategy is applied to new data to see if the results are consistent. .
Balance Sheet: A report of a corporation's financial condition at a specific time.

Backtesting
Backtesting your trading system can be a good idea to determine the strengths and weaknesses of your system. It is a very important tool you must use to create a working system.

Backtesting is the process of looking at how stock performed in the past and more importantly how your strategy would have performed in the past. Papertrading on the other hand means going out and trading with your strategy but with a "fake" account.

Backtesting: determining the results of using particular screening criteria, as if the screen had been run at some point back in time, and the selected stocks or funds were held for a predetermined time period and then sold.

Backtesting of this method shows that the optimum targets are 73 points for a buy and 79 points for a sell.

backtesting: Predicting the success of a trading strategy based on how well it has performed using historical data.

Backtesting allows to see how your system would have performed if it was run during some period in the past. You optimize indicator parameters using the price data in the backtesting period.

This info was presented in a 1998 Money magazine article by Laura Washington that addressed backtesting. Washington explained correctly why we should be wary of backtesting when we encounter it.

In backtesting the results are impressive so far. I believe once used with other filters (such as the obvious e.g. key areas of support and resistance, currency strength etc.

Keep in mind that many of these backtesting statistics look solely at past performance. It's important to mention here that past performance is not indicative of future results.

I don't know the reason for it, possibly usability or visual backtesting (just a guess).
Either way, Alligator indicator will only show what's happening now, it won't get any forecasting value no matter what Shift settings are.
