Breakaway Gap Definition
A breakaway gap is a gap that has a strong gap with a surge in volume. While the volume on a breakaway gap is high, it is not so high that it produces a climactic top or bottom.

 


Breakaway gap - The breakaway gap is considered a gap in the moving price of a specific security, which generally happens just before there is a significant new trend that takes place in the stock market or stock exchange.

A breakaway gap occurs when prices do not retrace their steps and fill in this gap. A runaway gap occurs after the trend has begun. In the December Hog chart, prices again leaped up suddenly.

A runaway gap has all of the features of a breakaway gap, except that a runaway gap simply augments a trend rather than starting a new trend and is usually the result of news that supports the trend.

A Trading range where there is an exhaustion gap down, then prices Trade in a narrow range, then there is a breakaway gap up. This Leaves a sort of island of prices in the middle.

There are a number of different types of gaps which include breakaway, continuation and exhaustion gaps. Breakaway gaps will occur after a security has been congesting in a narrow trading range as depicted in the chart below.

Notice that earlier this month in February 2009, AKAM spiked higher and closed above the $16.50 resistance level on high volume. This displayed a nice breakout move higher and shows a breakaway gap.

Breakaway Gap: Usually, a high-volume move out of a consolidation pattern. The strength of buying is sufficient to cause the security to jump to higher levels without trading at the intervening prices.
