bypass trust investment & finance definition
A trust that is created to minimize estate taxes by taking full advantage of a tax credit available when the first spouse dies.
A bypass trust normally works to establish a set of conditions that will provide for loved ones over the long term.
Bypass trust: A trust fund that transfers assets to the surviving spouse. The estate tax on this transfer is eliminated through the estate tax credit equivalency available to the first spouse.
