A Transaction in which the seller`s intention is to reduce or eliminate a Long position in a stock, or a given Series of options. ...

The closing sale is a type of transaction that allows an investor to end a purchased position associated with a given option. Closing sales are often employed when an investor wishes to exchange a long position for a short one, or vice versa.
