Contract Expiration Date
The date on which a currency must be delivered to fulfill the terms of the contract. For options, the last day on which the option holder can exercise his right to buy or sell the underlying instrument or currency.

 


The claim for delivery or promise to deliver is on the contract expiration date.

European-style options: an option that can be exercised by the buyer only on the contract expiration date.
Exercise: a decision, reserved for the option holder, to request execution of the contract.

What usually happens is that the buyer and seller liquidate their holdings before the contract expiration date. To do so, a buyer would need to sell their futures contract, and a seller would need to buy a futures contract.
