ECN's fee structure can be grouped in two basic structures: a classic structure and a credit (or rebate) structure. Both fee structures offer advantages of their own.

ECN hours vary, but most trading takes place from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. I'm always up and active before 8 a.m. because those first trades can be way off the mark.

There are brokers called ECN brokers and then there are market makers. ECN stands for electronic communications network and are the recommended forex broker.

On January 18, 2000, I placed an after hours GTC (good till cancelled) limit order on Island ECN to buy GALT at 30. I could not get the trade executed before close of business at 8:30 p.m.

If a subscriber wants to buy a stock through an ECN, but there are no sell orders to match the buy order, the order can't be executed until a matching sell order comes in.

One of the largest and better-known ECN's is Instinet, which is operated by Reuters. The network provides and easy to use structure that allows buyers to meet sellers online and forge working relationships.

Other things to consider would be execution time and whether the broker is a Market-maker or Non-dealing desk (NDD) broker, or whether they use an Electronic Communications Network or ECN to provide pricing.
