These include American and European options. American options can be exercised at any time between the date the option is purchase and the expiration date.

BARRIER OPTIONS Unlike standard European options where the payoff on expiry depends only on the price of the underlying at expiration, barrier options are path-dependent.

The model may also be used to value European options on instruments paying dividends. In this case, closed-form solutions are available if the dividend is a known proportion of the stock price.

If you buy a call Option you have the right, but not the obligation to buy the underlying instrument at the agreed strike price on the agreed expiry date (European Option).

For example, the embedded option in a 10-year noncallable for six months (10nc6M) can be likened to a 6-month European option on a 9.5-year security.

The most common types of option are the simple American and European options which have fixed strike prices and expiry dates. These are common, mathematically simple, and comparatively well understood. They are often referred to as vanilla options.

Investopedia Says:
European options don't allow early exercise, whereas American-style options do.

Expiration Date
The last day on which an option may be exercised for American style options. For European options, this is the only date when the option can be exercised.
Expiration Month
The month when an option or futures contract expires.

Trading options in the United States is different from buying and selling them in Europe. American options can be dealt anytime, while European options are not settled until after the expiration date.

So the models can be used for pricing European option, and American option as well, particularly for pricing American put option. Now the exact formula for pricing American put option has not been obtained.

This differs from a 'European option,' which may only be exercised on the expiration date. NYMEX options are 'American.' [NYMEX] An option that may be exercised at any time up to and including the expiration date.
