Ex dividend date The ex dividend date, also known as the reinvestment date, is a finance term referring to the first day of the ex-dividend period. It was introduced to allow all pending transactions to be finished before the record date.
The ex dividend date is the first day on which the share buyer does not qualify for the dividend, so you need to buy the shares or place the spread bet on the day before, or earlier.
Case in point I bought 3,000 shares of a stock the day before ex dividend date to get the dividend. The next day there was some economic news which forces the price higher. It was a commodity company.
